Why did I develop this Low Sodium Taco Seasoning recipe?
There are a few main reasons that prompted me to concoct this Low Sodium Taco Seasoning recipe:
- Regular taco seasoning is shockingly high in sodium! 2 teaspoons of the average taco seasoning contains 480 mg of sodium! This is in contrast to a comparable serving of our Low Sodium Taco Seasoning Recipe that contains < 1 mg!
- Store-bought low sodium taco seasoning can be hard to find. Sure, you’ll be able to find many “reduced sodium” and 25, 30 & even 40% “lower sodium” taco seasonings in the supermarket. These are still high in sodium, however. And true low sodium taco seasoning is not available in every store. For example, my local Wal-Mart does not carry it).
- Many store-bought or pre-packaged low sodium taco seasoning doesn’t taste great! The few low sodium taco seasonings that I was able to get my hands on were pretty bland.
- Or store-bought low sodium taco seasoning contained weird spices! Ginger and cinnamon in your tacos? However, I don’t know about you, but I prefer my tacos, fajitas and burritos to taste like tacos, fajitas and burritos!
Low Sodium Taco Seasoning Recipe ingredients
One of the great things about our Low Sodium Taco Seasoning recipe (besides tasting great!) is that it uses ordinary, everyday spices. These spices include:
- Chili powder—some brands contain sodium, so try to get the ones that are sodium-free. If unable to do so, the sodium content per serving will increase to ~ 40 mg. Which is still not bad!
- Cumin
- Oregano
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Cayenne pepper
- Sweet paprika

How much Low Sodium Taco Seasoning do I need to use?
If you recall, the serving size cited for regular taco seasoning was 2 teaspoons. However, you'll be able to use less Low Sodium Taco Seasoning for an equivalent amount of flavor. That's because regular taco seasoning contains corn starch and salt, which take up space.
Therefore, one serving of our Low Sodium Taco Seasoning is 1 ½ teaspoons. And approximately 2 tablespoon is needed to season 1 pound of meat/protein. However, keep in mind with food such as fajitas, where you are seasoning protein AND vegetables, you will likely need to use more seasoning.
Variations
You may adjust any of the above-noted spices to suit your taste preferences with very little effect on the nutrient value. Therefore, if you’re a garlic-lover, add more garlic powder! Similarly, if you like things a little spicy, add more cayenne pepper, chili pepper or red pepper flakes. The choice is yours!
Storage of your Low Sodium Taco Seasoning
If stored in an air-tight container in a cool, dark place, your Low Sodium Taco Seasoning will last at least 6 months. I like to make a double or triple batch and keep it in a jar with a lid. That way, it’s always fresh and I always have some on hand when I need it!
Don’t wait! Give it a try!
Our Low Sodium Taco Seasoning is almost sodium-free, is simple to make and can be used on tons of different food!. But best of all, it tastes great! So spice up your life a little and give this recipe a try!
